Applying for Canadian Citizenship in 5 steps

Although  the procedure for becoming a Canadian citizen takes quite a long time, applying is easy and fast.

But before applying for Canadian Citizenship I would like to suggest everybody to double check if they meet the residence requirement (To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, you must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) out of the four years (1,460 days) preceding your application). For your convenience you can use Residence Calculator. It is simple you just have to make sure you fill in all the required information and enter all dates correctly. Only if you you meet the residence requirement you can proceed to the next 5 steps for becoming a Canadian Citizen.

1. Obtain an application package.

There are two different packages:
If you are age 18 or older you will need this form: Application for Canadian Citizenship – Adults
If you are applying for you children (under age 18) you need this form: Application for Canadian Citizenship – Minors.

2. Read the instruction guide.

Make sure you read the instruction guide very closely and attentively before completing the Canadian citizenship application form. The fee for processing your form is not refundable.

3. Complete the application form and attach the necessary documents.

If you are 18 or older you will need to include the following with your application:
  • Proof of permanent residence, which can be - a Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence and copy of both sides of your permanent residence card.
  • Two signed citizenship photos, done according to the instructions in the guide.
  • Two pieces of identification at least one of which contains your photo.
  • The receipt of payment.
If you are applying for Canadian Citizenship on behalf of your child, you will need to include:
  • Two pieces of identification for the child.
  • Two photos of the child.
  • Your child’s Record of Landing.
  • Your child’s birth certificate.
  • If your child has PR card you need a copy of both sides.
  • The receipt of payment.
4. Pay the fee.

The fee is payable in Canadian dollars

5. Mail the application.
